The Cordovan is now available on line

The Cordovan is the local community newsletter published by the Cordova Bay Association for Community Affairs (CBA). As of September 2010, the newsletter will be electronic and will maintain its publication schedule of four issues a year. It will be delivered by e-mail to CBA members, for whom we have e-mail addresses, and will also be posted on the CBA website.

The final print edition was home-delivered in the first week of March 2010. (There will not be a printed edition in June this year.) Our sincerest thanks to all our volunteer deliverers who number more than 80!

Extra copies of The Cordovan are available at the Super Duper Store (Dollar Store) in The Cordova Bay Plaza; The Cordova Bay United Church, Claremont Avenue; Matticks Farm (on the bench behind Adrienne's) and the 55 Plus reception in the Cordova Bay elementary school.

In response to many suggestions, the new Cordovan will include a Letters-to-the-Editor column. This will provide a forum for comments and questions from residents of Cordova Bay on local issues, and hopefully give some answers.
If you would like an answer for something relevant to Cordova Bay, or wish to make a comment, please contact us by e-mail:

Digitizing and archiving the past newsletters

The history of Cordova Bay has been reflected in Spindrift, the monthly newsletter of the Cordova Bay Community Club from 1947 until it ceased publication in 1958, and in The Cordovan, the current newsletter of the Cordova Bay Association for Community Affairs (CBA) which has appeared four to six times a year since the CBA was founded in 1976. These publications are now available on the CBA website as a community service, and will also be on the Saanich website. The electronic newsletters are a tribute to our history, past editors and Board members of the CBA thanks to the generosity of Richard Alexander, his company LGL Limited environmental research associates in Sidney, and assistant Connie Kleckner (also a Cordova Bay resident) who scanned all the pages into searchable electronic PDF format. The digitized records were donated, along with the hard-copy originals, to Saanich Archives in November 2009, and the electronic versions posted on the CBA website in February 2010. The digitized newsletter collection totals 275, of which 117 were the Spindrift editions (1947-1958) and 158 were the Cordovan editions (1976-current).

Luncheon for The Cordovan volunteer deliverers
20 March 2010

Many of the 84 volunteer deliverers of The Cordovan were guests at a farewell lunch hosted by the Cordova Bay Association for Community Affairs (CBA) in late March. The event was held to thank them for delivering nearly 3,000 copies of each issue of the CBA's newsletter to every household in the community. As editor Maurice Chazottes remarked during his welcoming speech, some of the volunteers have been involved in The Cordovan for almost 30 years.

Maurice received a presentation gift to recognize his 10 years as editor, and in turn he was pleased to make a presentation to Penny Joppe in recognition of her work in organizing the efficient distribution system for the newsletter and her role as acting president of the CBA following the resignation of Roger Stonebanks due to major surgery. Making the presentation, Maurice also recognized Roger in the audience, now fully recovered and still active in the community.

Peggy Hancyk was also presented with a gift to thank her for giving up so much of her time over the past 20 years to liaise between advertisers and The Cordovan production team.
